Working on a job that will apparently never be complete. Finally down to the finish. Customer originally wanted to stain, then decided they wanted to paint with glazing accents. Ok. Five sample doors later, they're still not satisfied. Meeting with him today with my final sample. I'm prepared at this point to say this is what I can provide, if it isn't satisfactory, you'll have to have it done elsewhere. Hope it doesn't come to that.

So here's the question: Does anyone know a technique or tool that will allow creation of a fine, freehand application of a glaze accent?

The doors have a groove around the outer perimeter of the face. On the flat surface of the raised panel there's a beaded mold. Customer wants accent in the groove (fine) and on the outer edge of the bead (not so fine). Started off using a glazing pen, but they didn't like the thickness of the accent by the bead. Customer used a fine paintbrush and made a thin accent outside the bead. Said he "really took his time." Fine. There are 50 doors. He is coming over to discuss with me the sample I prepared using his technique. I'm assuming either he wants something different or I've talked myself into doing 50 doors this way.

Would love to hear any comments, suggestions or tips. Thanks.

Follow up if anyone's interested. After meeting with the customer, they decided they only want the accent in the groove. Wahoo! In searching for a solution to this problem, I found three different cabinet sites that state specifically they will only provide accents in grooves. I'm taking a page from their book from now on. Lesson learned.

Hi Tom

I'm very interested as I'm going through what could become the early stages of the very same thing right now with a glaze job. I know even less than you did about it and the job isn't paying very well so I can't afford to build 5 samples. I'd appreciate the links to the sites you founf useful.

Thanks Tom Fortner

We build cabinet doors here and thats all we do.
I've been back on many jobs after the finish work is completed. Some (stain / glaze) jobs look really good, others look, well, (barn paint) comes to mind! I would look for really professional finish people for ideas!
That might be your answer.

A year after beginning this kitchen it is in and we are done. The customer ended up sitting in my shop and applied the glaze accent himself. I wouldn't normally have allowed this, but, I know you hear this coming, this was a 'friend' that I've known for years. We weren't very close and we are less so now. And honestly, I'm still not sure if they are satisfied. In my opinion, and my wife agrees, it is the most beautiful kitchen I've built. The problem with this customer was that I couldn't provide perfection. Just glad it is over.
