Sawdust Soup

Hello everyone,
I can`t seem to find out how to segment a cherry log, to turn bowls on a lathe ?
Just a novice turner, so maybe someone can help me !
I have a cherry log{stump} that I want to cut up with a chainsaw, I want to make a salad bowl set, 1 big bowl plus 8 little ones, The log is 18" at the widest and 16" high.It has a burl all around it !!! This should give a neat design !!
How do I cut it in sections, to make the best use of it ???
Thanks ,
Steve.

Hi Steve,
You have created a nice problem for yourself.. I like it when our brain gets ahead of your hands....
I have a solution that will work but is tricky and then I have a tool idea.
The problem is how do you have enough wood to create bowls without wasting all that wood between each bowl. the concept is to 'nest' them- cut blanks from the middle of the bowl that is closer to the headstock.
The homespun way would be to mount the rough wood blank and make it round and with a true face. take a parting tool and go in on an angle towards the headstock to create the first bowl. This is tricking and fairly dangerous but doable. Each consecutive bowl do the same thing..
The tool way... search for 'McNaughton Center-Saver System' ( it saves the center but not the bank book). It lists at Lee Valley Tools for between $269 - $675 CDN. When you find the webpage that explains how it works, you will see how to do it the harder way.
I hope that helps with the question... Please let me know if and how you are able to get your bowl set.
