How big do you have to be before Lean thinking really helps you? Is there as much to gain for the small shop under 5 employees as there is for the big factory operation?

I agree with Will. You have a good understanding of the foundational tool of Lean - Workplace Organization. If everyone got rid of the clutter and organized the remaining value-adding stuff in a disciplined way so tools, instructions, drawings, fixtures, etc. were easily obtained when needed they could improve productivity by at least 50%. That may be hard to believe, but I have 20 years experience implementing Lean and I know it to be a fact.
