We all want to buy items that are different in some way from what can easily be found in the marketplace. If you are able to take part in the design it will be more interesting to the buyer. If in the process you learn a little about history, better…

This industry has got to take a hard look at its practices and decide who can fix it; it’s the guy you look at in the mirror every morning. We’ve become too caught up in the tactical problems of the day, and for understandable reasons. Let me remind…

This would make an excellent educational tool for plant employees about the dangers within a plant. Most of us at one time or another have seen similar characteristics on a smaller scale. Be smart, be careful out there.

Product substitution is all around us. Is it too expensive to go to out to the movies? Try Netflix. Gas is trending up? Try a smaller car. Retail prices too high? Try E-Bay. How about this one, 1c common is too expensive for your wood shop? Try uppe…

The vacuum cleaner is pretty amazing. It’s a cool machine for being able to pick up stuff, but it is not extraordinary in that respect. It’s amazing for what it shows us about ourselves. You pull out the filter and you see dog hair, cat hair, maybe…

The Talk in the Hardwood Yard

I’ve spoken with many, many owners as well as sales and production managers in our hardwood manufacturing industry within the last three weeks that have given me small pieces into the mosaic which is our current hardwood market. Here are a few of my findings. I hope you find them useful.

Lumber prices have been on the rise for the last 60 days, particularly on the green side. Wholesaler brokers are now having a harder time getting between deals as the manufacturers and wholesalers of kiln dried… Continue

Strategically creating your pockets of excellence.

This industry has got to take a hard look at its practices and decide who can fix it; it’s the guy you look at in the mirror every morning. We’ve become too caught up in the tactical problems of the day, and for understandable reasons. Let me remind you of the biggest issues that we need to consider today, next week, and next year; we need to think bigger than we currently are. Why are you using THAT grade?

Product substitution is all around us. Is it too expensive to go to out to the movies? Try Netflix. Gas is trending up? Try a smaller car. Retail prices too high? Try E-Bay. How about this one, 1c common is too expensive for your wood shop? Try upper grade…WHAT! Try UPPER GRADE!! Not a typo. Counterintuitive,… but not a typo.

I’m sure you noticed the lumber prices have come dramatically off their highs of a few years ago. We’ve had many variables in our market changing since that time. What has… Continue

Findings from a thorough cleaning.

The vacuum cleaner is pretty amazing. It’s a cool machine for being able to pick up stuff, but it is not extraordinary in that respect. It’s amazing for what it shows us about ourselves. You pull out the filter and you see dog hair, cat hair, maybe some Legos, dust, sand, gum wrappers, fingernails, paper clips and those little plastic price tag holders that you need to snap off your new clothes; all that stuff. And that’s what a thorough cleaning does, it shows us about our what we don’t need an… Continue
