Haven't been to the site in a while, Karl. I have been working with a visionary company in NC as they transform to Lean thinking, but missed the Barcalounger announcement. What a shame. The real shame is that this sort of thing doesn't have to happe…

I agree with Will. You have a good understanding of the foundational tool of Lean - Workplace Organization. If everyone got rid of the clutter and organized the remaining value-adding stuff in a disciplined way so tools, instructions, drawings, fixt…

I am a friend of Art and have already sent him a note regarding statements in this month's article in the magazine, but I want to share my comments with others in the industry as well. I hope everyone who reads the article will be upset as I was. As a business consultant working with furniture manufacturers to help them improve their competitive position in the global maretplace, I am aware of the current situation of weak managers willing to take a hike rather than make a commitment to move

Looking for domestic case goods supplier

I am a Lean specialist working with a North Carolina case goods manufacturer who is interested in bringing product back from the Pacific Rim to manufacture in-house or domestically. They have found that importing is not their cup of tea. They have a high end product and are interested in developing relationships with companies that can manufacture what they need, when they need it, at a price that creates a win/win/win for the supplier, the company, and the customer. If anyone is interested in m… Continue

What type of case goods are you looking for? Finished or unfinished, volume?

Jim, I'm not sure why Lean seems to be such a hard sell to the woodworking world, but they've been slow to adopt a lot of new technology. Still, I have to laugh a bit, remembering what Shigeo Shingo told me when I met him way back in the 1980s. He said most of his ideas for the Toyota Production System were derived from the work of classic American efficiency experts from decades before. Often "new" is just another way of looking at what has gone before. Best of luck to you in your Lean adventures in whatever industry.

Of course, James - we'd love to give you the tour of our factory! Let me know when you'll be in the Chicago area, and we'll set something up.

Thank You for your e-mail. James I'm primarily a tech rep for a couple of
manufacturers. My shop is in my garage and only used for models, testing and
research or a custom one off when time permits. You are more than welcome but a cup of coffee in a local eatery might be just as rewarding. My web site has pretty good traffic but I expect it is more for information than anything else.

I have been in the industry a good while and have many friends that I have met over the years. Maybe our paths have crossed at a tradeshow, a trade association meeting or our company Stiles Machinery.
