It's a shame that the bigger wood machine companies decide to drop out entirely and not just downsize. We have seen the smaller regional shows practically disappear in the last four years and I'm afr…

I am a little reluctant to chime in. From the title and content is it might just be a statement about dowels and not a discussion, however here goes. I doweled for more than ten years. It was wonderful and there are cost advantages. About five years…

I agree about the advantages of dowel construction BUT it has its limitations. We mfg. custom Store fixtures which can be about any shape the designer can come up with. For odd shapes Confirmats or other "bench processes" are required. For simple bo…

Great doors. You may be doing this already but you should market these as a product.

Thanks for the ideas, John. I've learned a lot of things about marketing and selling these past few months, mostly from folks like you who take the time to help guide us rookies in the right direction. Products to compliment- great idea. Perhaps bun…

Hi Lloyd, The first problem that needs to be addressed when you are trying to sell a product, as opposed to woodworking (a service) is that product must be branded and merchandized. Here's an example. I have a client who has recently started sellin…

Hi Lloyd, Sometimes new ideas that are Great but too far outside the box have trouble finding a market. What is your copy like? I do study this stuff ( call me crazy but I read the junk mail!) and offer to look at your pieces that you mail and I may…

Hi, Wesley, Thanks for your ideas. I'm a little surprised I haven't gotten more response, at least to ask for more information. Many of the building supply dealers that I've talked to all say the same thing- bad weather makes deliveries a hassle, an…

Hi Lloyd, The return on investment (ROI) for mass mailing depends on so many things. The list- hot or cold, qualified or not, the piece that is mailed, etc ... The direct response industry say that about 1% response is good. So 1 out of 5000 from a…

Interesting ideas, John. Any idea of response rates one might expect from sending out brochures, postcards, etc. to target people? I've heard contractors saying they're lucky to get one solid lead from 5000 mailings! But then, that's through a post…

Getting Ahead in a Down Market

Everyone complains about the downward pricing pressure of today's market with the same lament: "We are staying
busy, but we can't make any money at the prices we are getting for our product." Well, that seems to say that there is business to be had, but only for those who can produce very efficiently, at the least cost per unit, and with no sacrifice in quality.

This reminds me of a conversation I had recently with Gordon, a small custom shop owner in the Pacific Northwest who was commenting on… Continue

I am the Marketing Manager for Tritec Associates, Inc., the sole importer and distributor of Gannomat Machinery in the US. We do extensive marketing in magazines and the web as well as at the AWFS and IWF shows.
The first step in marketing is making up a plan and than applying a budget. The budget part is difficult for many start ups so I recommend the initial budget be for business cards, a sales sheet and postcards. About 500.00 if you do it yourself and about double that if the layout and processing is done by someone else. Once you have these in hand, and looking professional, sales can begin.
