Book documents FastCap lean efforts

One of my favorite lean practitioners to talk with is Paul Akers at FastCap. His enthusiasm for lean manufacturing and the Toyota Production System is absolutely infectious, and his ability to find and inspire creative solutions seems boundless. A new book has documented some of the lean improvements Akers and his team at FastCap have done. The book, written by Jon Miller of the Kaizen Institute, is titled "Creating a Kaizen Culture." For…See More

Turning a woodworking hobby into a business

Over the years, I've met legions of woodworkers interested in turning their hobby into a business. I've also met scores of them who did exactly that with varying degrees of success. There is a wonderful ongoing and lengthy discussion of this over at LinkedIn that is worth reading if you are in…See More

Ronald Davison commented on Will Sampson's blog post Glass as a countertop?
"I am interested in petrifying low-density wood with liquid glass to make it harder and stronger, because the upper portions of my coconut trees need to be used. Has anyone tried sodium silicate treatment and grinding? "

John Robinson commented on Will Sampson's blog post Glass as a countertop?
"We just used it for wall cabinet shelves throughout a recent kitchen, and discussed it for the backsplashes but chose to go another way. All the kitchen shelves are 3/8 tempered for ease of cleaning."

Glass as a countertop?

Having recently returned from both the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show and the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, I see a continuing trend for mixed media in cabinetry and furniture. Everyone is trying to use different materials for visual effect. Metal, wood, glass, reclaimed lumber, tile, plastic, engineered material such as solid surface, granite, stone, terrazzo, and more recycled stuff than I can list. One of the trends is the use of glass in countertops and backsplashes, sometimes…See More

Stealth storage or creative use of offcuts?

Every shop I've ever visited had a pile of offcuts stacked off to the side (or in some cases the piles seemed to be taking over the shop). But check out this clever use of scrap to disguise a storage cabinet. So, have I been missing something? I thought the piles of scrap were more of an eye sore than a standard cabinet would be. Maybe I've been missing the inherent beauty in the scrap pile --…

Plumbing marches on

I spent much of yesterday at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City. I always enjoy visiting this show, which in 2013 marks its 25th anniversary. It is a very design-focused show, typically featuring cutting edge furniture design from all over the world. I was especially looking forward to the show this year because my schedule did not allow me to attend for a couple of years. I did indeed enjoy the show, and I'll be…

Hi Will.I hope I can find a good picture,'ll do my best.If you want you can have my notes about the cabinet.I made notes, because some things just struck me as odd and wanted to delve deeper sometime.I'll be in touch.I kept the drawers, they are perfect and fit in a piece of workshop furniture. Not too sure if this is lean, but I needed to reorganise/streamline/rationalise.

Will,

Thanks for the comments.

We love walnut. It is soft and mellow as far as an instrument wood and works well if you like to sing folk kinds of songs.

We have been building reproduction furniture for more than 38 years and have always love working walnut. This praticular guitar has wood that we actually cut from the tree, kiln dried etc.

Hi Will. I am engaged in some other Lean activities right now that have little to do with the furniture industry so my focus is changing. I am very disappointed that this site has not created more interest in Lean. Participants seem to think Lean doesn't have a place in their business. Unfortunately that is how many in the furniture industry view Lean. It is no wonder the industry is dying on the vine. I am working with companies that genuinely want to survive and thrive.
