Karl Forth Found a busy shop

I found a woodshop that was busy. Last week, I stopped by the local park district woodshop to say hello and was surprised to see seven or eight people all working on projects -- at about 1 p.m. on a Friday. My first thought was that they may have been unemployed and were taking advantage of the time off to finish up that table. I didn't ask if this was the case, however. Maybe they were retired. Either way, they were cutting, sanding and finishing. That's always good to see. Continue

Karl Forth Just walk away

I had a conversation with a friend recently and we discussed debts, paying off mortgages, and the housing market. The current debate: Is it morally right to simply stop paying your mortgage and walk away?

If you’ve lost yo

Will Sampson New poll up and waiting for your prediction

We have a new poll up and we decided to ask the $64,000 question: When do you think the recession will end? So, get out your crystal balls and make a prediction. And while you are doing that, you can check out a story about a noted economist who spoke at the Stiles Executive Breifing conference and made his predictions for the woodworking industry. This is from someone who predicted the recession, so at least he has a track record, which

Will Sampson Participate in our weekly poll

I hope you've noticed that we've added a weekly opinion poll to Sawdust Soup. If you haven't seen it yet, look for it on the lower left-hand side of the main page. Every week we plan to post a new question. Last week's question probed issues of business challenges in the current economy. Lack of work and a need for marketing was at the top of most people's lists. This week we're taking that a step farther with a question about what kinds of marketing tools you find most effective.

Karl Forth Credit availability concerns grow for companies

A survey of manufacturers in Minnesota this week indicated that companies were much more optimistic about the economy than they were last year. More than a quarter expected an economic expansion in 2010 and 44 percent of companies expected their revenue to increase in 2010.

An increasing worry for manufacturing executives is the decreasing availability of credit. The percentage of companies that reported a constriction of credit increased th

Jay Does the term "Amish built" bother you at all ?

This morning I saw an ad for a local furniture store that was running a sale on Amish built furniture. Now I know that there are alot of fine Amish craftsmen out there but most of the Amish shops in my area are using the same tools, and the same building process that I use. The only difference is I use electricity to power my tools and they use a diesel powered belt system to power theirs. I get a little annoyed when the general public thinks that Amish built means better built. OContinue

Karl Forth Don't hide in the basement

There has been a lot of talk about the upcoming IWF show, now about six months away. Some of the largest equipment manufacturers and distributors have announced they will not attend the show in Atlanta Aug. 25 to 28. In the past week many of the major Canadian companies announced they will not exhibit at this year's SIBO show in Quebec.

IWF is still the largest event on the North American woodworking calendar, and there will be many new products and innovations at the show, even if it

Karl Forth Combustible dust concerns

We received a few questions from a smaller shop about the proposed new regulations on combustible dust. One was whether small shops need HEPA or better filtration to meet airborne dust limits. What kind of explosion protection is needed for small one- or two-bag standalone collectors? And what kind of vacuum cleaners are approved for workworkers? Even a small "explosion proof" unit reportedly cost $5,000. And all the past cases on OSHA's list seem to be larger companies. Are there cases of du

We reviewed Rockler's innovative Bench Cookies in CabinetMaker+FDM magazine, and you can see our video review on our website. From the first time we saw this clever work support devices, we were enthralled with the possibilities, many of which go beyond woodworking. For example, I use a set in the office to lift up my laptop computer and allow more air circulation for cooling. But t… Continue

Elemental LED Staff LEDs light up a midtown gallery

We recently spoke with Grimanesa Amorós, an artist who splits her time between New York City and Peru, about a recent gallery installation in which she used some of our flexible LED strip lighting. In the installation, titled La Incubadora (2010), she has re-envisioned the Lab Gallery at Roger Smith Hotel in Manhattan as a warm human incubator for her sculptures of imagined hybrid humans. Did this kind of flexible LED strip lighting suggest how the pieces in La Incubadora would be installed, or… Continue

Karl Forth FDM Restaurant

Just a quick note that we enjoyed dinner at FDM restaurant in Chicago recently. It offers upscale Mexican cuisine. It is named for another restaurant, Fonda del Mar, not FDM magazine. They did, however, have some nice wood tables and chairs and a nice colored wood decor in a spacious room. If we find a CabinetMaker Kitchen we'll post it here first. Continue
