We attended the KBIS show at McCormick Place in Chicago a few days ago and came up with some broad observations. The most significant to me was the fact that there were more companies selling cabinets made in China than companies selling cabinets made in the United States and Canada. This included American companies selling an all-import line, and companies based in China.
In terms of number of kitchen displays, there were still more domestic cabinets. But only a few large cabinet…Continue
We are in the final throws of putting together a new directory issue of CabinetMaker+FDM. Over the weekend I attended a gallery open house that gave me some reason to be optimistic about a recovery in woodworking. The open house was at the Sugarwood Gallery in Farmington, Maine. The gallery showcases arts and crafts from a wide range of Maine craftsmen. There are paintings, handblown glass, ceramics, wood turning and carvings, but it is dominted by wood furniture, and it is a major showcase for…Continue

Today is the official census day, the day that we count every person living in the United States. The final count will determine representation in Congress, federal funding and all kinds of things. If you were to start a cabinet shop based on census data, where would it be?
This year, Texas appears to be the biggest gainer in population, and may pick up as many as four seats in the House. California, which has been adding seats since the 1960s, might not gain any this time.…Continue
