Sawdust Soup

We just posted an update on the combustible dust situation on our web site, check it out at http://www.cabinetmakerfdm.com/5856.html. OSHA has scheduled two meetings Dec. 14 and has a comment period until Jan. 19. We believe there are a lot of woodworking companies out there that aren't aware of this situation. Which will be worse, the potential for an explosion in your operation, or the potential for regulations that you can't afford to comply with?

For the vast majority of companies, I'm afraid you're right. We'll see how the regulations come out. There's still an opportunity to get involved.

That's an easy answer. More govt regulations will be worse, much worse. This is such an overprotective society, and it's just getting worse. We just can't possibly legislate a perfect world. I don't know much about dust explosions so all I can recall are grain elevator type accidents, not cabinet shops. I'm such a small shop it's not going to affect me anyway, but I do feel for the larger shops that have to put up with this kinda stuff. I think the do-gooders should work on protecting everyone from getting struck by lightning. I'd wager there's a far greater chance of that.
