Sawdust Soup

Homeowners were presented with several low-cost improvement options in the November issue of Kiplinger's Personal Finance, www.kiplinger.com. Instead of updating cabinets, readers were advised to install new hardwood or bamboo floors (as well as ceramic and linoleum). Adding slide-out cabinet shelves or a new backsplash were suggested. Another area for upgrading was the closet, and several low-cost options were presented. The Container Store and ClosetMaid were two sources. Most of these suggestions would be well below the cost of work done by people in this community, but the desire for low-cost upgrades by consumers in this economy should be recognized. Maybe a small job today would lead to a larger one three years from now.
